Co-Occurring Day Treatment Program

For Mental Health Disorders with Integrated Substance Use Treatment

This Partial Hospitalization Program is designed to support adults, 18 years and older, who are struggling with a mental health condition and a substance use disorder, and are motivated to recover. Through structured, evidence-based care, individuals learn ways to effectively manage their mental health while abstaining from using substances to live a fulfilling and healthy life.

Our Treatment Program

This abstinence-oriented program addresses the connection between mental health and substance use and helps clients gain a deeper understanding of their illnesses while equipping them with tools to use in everyday life. This 5-day-a-week program includes group and individual therapy, weekly appointments with a psychiatrist, and family/caregiver support.

Clients are strongly encouraged to participate in AA, NA, or Smart Recovery in the community while participating in treatment. Family/caregiver involvement is also strongly encouraged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our co-occurring program is designed for adults with both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder, treating both simultaneously rather than individually, since the two interact and each can worsen the other. According to SAMHSA, more than 8.9 million U.S. adults have a co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder, and only a small share receive treatment for both.

HopeWay's Co-Occurring PHP follows the same schedule and structure as the standard Adult PHP, meeting five days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The difference is its specialized focus on treating individuals with both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder.

In addition to evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and integrative therapies, the Co-Occurring PHP includes an abstinence-oriented substance use curriculum. Clients participate in relapse prevention, psychoeducation about the relationship between mental health and substance use, and are required to engage in community-based recovery support, such as 12-Step or SMART Recovery meetings, as part of their ongoing recovery plan.

A primary mental health diagnosis means that a person's main treatment focus is a mental health condition, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or another psychiatric illness. While someone may have other health concerns, their care is centered on treating their mental health symptoms.

A co-occurring disorder means that a person is living with both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder at the same time. Because these conditions often affect one another, treating them together through an integrated approach can improve recovery outcomes and support lasting wellness.

Yes. HopeWay does not provide detox services, so if necessary clients need to first complete medical detox elsewhere. We can coordinate with the detox facility for continuity of care. HopeWay’s program focuses on ongoing recovery skills rather than acute withdrawal management.

Through an integrated model using CBT to identify and challenge thinking patterns that drive both symptom relapse and substance use, and DBT to build emotion regulation and distress tolerance, paired with education on the physiology of addiction and its relationship to psychiatric symptoms.

Yes, 12-step principles are incorporated into the treatment curriculum. Additionally, clients are strongly encouraged to participate in AA, NA, or SMART Recovery in the community while in the program.

The majority of our clients use their insurance to cover treatment. HopeWay is in-network with several major providers, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Magellan, MedCost, Carolina Behavioral Health Alliance, United Behavioral Health, and is a VA Community Care provider. Our finance team will check insurance benefits and authorization during the admissions process.

HopeWay's Co-Occurring Program includes specialized treatment focused on addressing both mental health and substance use concerns. In addition to the evidence-based therapies offered across HopeWay's PHP tracks, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and integrative therapies such as art, music, mind/body connection, and drama, clients participate in substance-use-focused programming. Specialized groups may include substance use psychoeducation, relapse prevention, recovery-focused skill-building, and the integration of 12-Step concepts and other recovery principles. These services help clients better understand the connection between mental health and substance use while developing tools to support long-term recovery.

Clients can expect weekly psychiatrist appointments.

HopeWay offers medication-assisted treatment as part of its Co-Occurring Disorders Program, but it is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Each client receives an individualized treatment plan based on their unique needs, symptoms, goals, and clinical recommendations. Medication-assisted treatment may be recommended when appropriate, while other clients may not require medication as part of their care.

Yes. Drug screenings and toxicology testing are part of HopeWay's Co-Occurring Program.

Family/caregiver involvement is strongly encouraged in HopeWay's co-occurring program.

We recognize that, for individuals with a co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder, it can sometimes be difficult to separate which condition is “primary” and which is “secondary.” Both conditions can impact one another and are addressed together through an integrated approach. However, HopeWay is primarily a mental health treatment organization, and our Co-Occurring Program is designed for individuals who are seeking treatment for a mental health condition along with substance use concerns. We do not provide standalone addiction treatment or medical detox services. During the admissions process, our team will help determine whether HopeWay's program is the appropriate level of care based on each individual's needs.

HopeWay provides clients with tools and resources to support continued recovery after completing the Co-Occurring Program. Throughout treatment, clients develop evidence-based coping skills through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), learn strategies for managing triggers and challenges, and build connections with community recovery supports such as 12-Step and other mutual-support groups. Prior to discharge, HopeWay's Aftercare Coordinators work with each client to create a personalized aftercare plan that may include outpatient therapy, psychiatric follow-up, and continued participation in community recovery meetings. This ongoing support helps clients maintain the progress made during treatment and continue building a foundation for long-term wellness.

After completing HopeWay's Co-Occurring PHP, each client will leave with an individualized aftercare plan developed by their treatment team and Aftercare Coordinator. Because every person's recovery journey is different, the next steps may look different depending on their clinical needs, goals, and level of progress. We typically recommend clients step down to an IOP level of care. In addition, clients are strongly encouraged to continue participating in community recovery supports, such as 12-Step programs or SMART Recovery, as part of their ongoing wellness plan. Aftercare may also include continued outpatient therapy, psychiatric care, and other recommended supports to help clients maintain the skills they developed during treatment and continue progressing in recovery.
