HopeWay Launches a New Day Treatment Program for Individuals with Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders

June 18, 2026

HopeWay announces the launch of its new Co-Occurring Day Treatment Program, an expansion of its services designed to meet the growing need for integrated treatment for adults experiencing both mental health conditions and substance use disorders.

After nearly 10 years of serving individuals and families across the Charlotte community and beyond, HopeWay has seen a significant increase in the number of individuals struggling with co-occurring disorders.

This trend reflects a broader national challenge. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, over 35% of adults aged 18 and older in the United States who have a mental health disorder also have a substance use disorder. Many individuals turn to alcohol or drugs to cope with symptoms of depression, anxiety and/or insomnia.  While this may provide temporary relief, substance use often worsens mental health symptoms over time, creating a challenging cycle that can be difficult to break.

HopeWay's new Co-Occurring Day Treatment Program was developed to address both conditions simultaneously, providing specialized, integrated care that helps individuals build a foundation for lasting recovery and improved mental wellness.

The Co-Occurring Day Treatment Program, designed for adults age 18 and older, combines evidence-based mental health and substance use treatment with recovery support. This includes, but is not limited to, helping individuals develop improved coping strategies, maintain healthy relationships, build resilience, and maintain recovery while addressing the underlying factors contributing to both conditions.

"As the prevalence of mental health and substance use disorders continues to rise, it is essential that treatment meets the complex needs of those we serve under one roof," said Alyson R. Kuroski-Mazzei, DO, DFAPA, FASAM, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer of HopeWay. "With more than one-third of adults with a mental health condition also experiencing a substance use disorder, integrated treatment is more important than ever. Our new Co-Occurring Day Treatment Program provides evidence-based care that addresses the whole person. By treating mental health conditions, substance use disorders and medical issues simultaneously, we can help individuals build a stronger foundation for long-term recovery, healing, and overall well-being."

The program is designed for individuals who require a higher level of support than traditional outpatient care or support groups, but do not require 24/7 residential treatment. Through a structured treatment environment, participants engage in therapeutic programming focused on understanding the relationship between mental health and substance use, developing relapse prevention skills, improving emotional regulation, and strengthening healthy support systems.

HopeWay's multidisciplinary treatment team includes psychiatrists, therapists, nurses, and other behavioral health professionals who work collaboratively to create individualized treatment plans tailored to each client's unique needs and recovery goals.

The launch of the Co-Occurring Day Treatment Program reflects HopeWay's ongoing commitment to expanding access to high-quality mental health care while  responding to the evolving needs of our  community.
