Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorder (OSFED)
This category encompasses individuals whose symptoms resemble an eating or feeding disorder but may not meet the full criteria for any of the other eating disorder diagnoses according to the DSM-5. These individuals still experience significant distress and similar symptoms to anorexia, bulimia, and binge-eating disorders and this diagnosis still indicates that an individual should seek treatment.
Examples include:
Atypical anorexia nervosa: all of the criteria for anorexia nervosa are met, except that there is no significant weight loss.
Bulimia nervosa: all of the criteria for bulimia nervosa are met, except that the frequency and/or duration is limited.
Binge eating disorder: all of the criteria for binge eating disorder are met, except that the frequency and/or duration is limited.
Purging disorder: recurrent purging behavior (vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics or other medications) to influence weight or shape in the absence of binge eating.
Night eating syndrome: recurrent episodes of night eating manifested by eating after awakening from sleep or by excessive food consumption after the evening meal. There is an awareness and recall of eating. The night eating causes significant distress and/or impairment in functioning.
