The Power of Play

What is Recreational Therapy?

Some people think recreational therapy (rec therapy) is just about physical activity or playing games. While these elements are certainly part of it, rec therapy goes much deeper.

Engaging in playful activities isn’t just for children - it’s a valuable and healthy practice for all ages. Because play activates different brain regions than those involved in the fight-or-flight response, engaging in play fosters psychological safety, allowing individuals to respond positively rather than reacting negatively to stressors.

Recreational Therapy Activities for Mental Health

Rec therapy is one of the integrative therapies that can easily be incorporated into everyday life. Playing games like Uno, Apples to Apples, or even a simple game of kickball can provide the same benefits outside of treatment: helping to reduce stress, strengthen connections, and promote emotional well-being.

Finding ways to remain playful in daily life can support a relaxed mental state and foster wellbeing. That’s the power of play!
